A United States Navy Poseidon P-8 aircraft on the flight line at RAAF Edinburgh with the aircraft it will replace the P3 Orion. Air 7000 Phase 2B seeks to deliver eight P-8A Poseidon as the manned Maritime Patrol and Response Aircraft (MRPA) capability to replace in part the AP-3C Orion Maritime Intelligence, Surveillance Reconnaissance and Response (MISRR) capability.

Project Director Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance, Group Captain Leon Phillips and Air 7000 ILS Manager, Wing Commander Rosemary Dyke, are shown the surveillance equipment onboard the US Navy Poseidon P-8A. TAMEX 12-2, is an anti-submarine warfare exercise, conducted by RAAF, US Navy and RAN in the West Australian Exercise Area (WAXA) and hosted by RAAF Base Pearce from June 4 to 15, 2012. RAAF AP-3C Orion aircraft and personnel of 92 Wing took part with HMAS Collins, RAN Seahawk helicopters from 816 Squadron and two P-8 Poseidon aircraft and a P-3 Orion from the USN. The exercise served to develop co-operative maritime surveillance interoperability and Anti Submarine Warfare procedures between 92 Wing, RAN and coalition forces.

  • AIR 7000: ADF Maritime ISR capability replacement

    • Programme to replace the AP-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft with a manned MPA/UAV mix.
      • AIR 7000, Phase 1B: Purchase of 7 high altitude, long endurance maritime surveillance UAV. The MQ-4C Global Hawk was originally selected for the role, but the decision has been delayed until after the manned portion is introduced.
      • AIR 7000, Phase 2B: Purchase of 8 Boeing P-8A Poseidon manned MPA has been given first-pass approval for service entry from 2018.
