Comprising both airborne and ground-based segments, Elta's EL/I-3001 Airborne Integrated SIGINT System (AISIS) is designed for installation aboard a Gulfstream G500 series aircraft and has a secondary airborne command and control capability alongside its primary SIGINT function. The architecture searches for intercepts, measures, locates, analyses, classifies and monitors ground-based, airborne and naval emitters that operate within the 20 to 1,200 MHz and 0.5 to 18 GHz frequency bands. Within the system, the EL/I-3001 airborne segment comprises a package of "high sensitivity, high probability-of-intercept" COMINT/ELINT receivers; 12 "flexible" COMINT/ELINT operator stations; local servers; a local area network; a recording/playback system and a communications system that includes HF, VHF and UHF air-to-air/air-to-ground radios, an intercom system (connecting the airborne systems operators with the EL/I-3001's ground segment) and line of sight and satellite communications datalinks. The architecture's ground-based element comprises communications, COMINT and ELINT "centres" and is capable of pre-mission preparation, real-time mission control, real-time sensor remote control, post-mission off-line analysis and the preparation and dissemination of Electronic Order of Battle (EOB) and intelligence reports. The system's ground segment also includes a wide area network for centre intercommunication and linkage to external intelligence customers, while the EL/I-3001 AISIS offers local, remote and combined operating modes. The local mode makes use of the system's airborne operators, with the remote option seeing sensor control in the hands of ground-based operators. The combined mode employs both the airborne and the ground-based system operators.
Under a contract awarded in 2001, the IAF has acquired three G550 aircraft, to be known as "Shavit" (Comet), equipped with the EL/I-3001. These were delivered at annual intervals from 2005; the first arrived in June 2005 for subsequent fitting with AISIS. Both this and the second platform were reported to have taken part in operations against Hizbullah fighters in southern Lebanon during July and August 2006. All 3 are believed to be in service with the IAF's No 122 Squadron at Nevatim Air Force Base. Unconfirmed reports suggest that at least one "Shavit" aircraft was involved in the IDF/AF's 5 September 2007 raid on what has been described as a "nuclear facility" in Syria, and usually reliable sources also report that the "Shavit" platform was used to generate electronic order-of-battle data during Operation "Cast Lead" against Hamas infrastructure in the Gaza Strip in 2008/9. In August 2011 Jane's sources were reporting that the IDF's General Staff were reviewing an ISR upgrade plan that included the acquisition of at least one additional G550 Shavit SIGINT aircraft. The plan was expected to be adopted in late 2011, although there is no confirmed timeframe for the acquisition.
